In the late 1990s, approximately 14 acres of noncontiguous wetlands were permitted for filling at Portland International Airport (PDX) to make safety and transportation-related improvements.
When wetland fills cannot be avoided, the Port works with natural resource agencies and interested watershed groups to locate mitigation sites within the same watershed to replace impacted or lost wetlands.
Purchased in May 1999, the 90-acre former Radio Towers site was an ideal choice for wetlands mitigation because of the property's size, continuity and location within the Columbia River watershed.
With mitigation construction and planting now completed, the site Is home to approximately 70 contiguous acres of restored wetlands, providing birds, aquatic species and other wildlife a better refuge and resting place than could have been possible if the alternative had been to mitigate the small, noncontiguous sites available in and around PDX.
