Welcome to the Port of Portland's official Web site exhibit of the former KGW radio broadcast towers and transmission building, located in North Portland.
Learn the historical details surrounding the rise and fall of the longest continuously operated radio transmission facility in the Portland metropolitan area, which was built for Oregon's first commercial radio station.
Find out why, in May 1999, the Port purchased the 90-acre Radio Towers site, and why it was necessary to remove the two 625-foot-tall, steel-reinforced antennas 1 1/2 years later.
This fascinating story outlines the history of commercial radio in the Portland area, and shows how unused industrial property can become a model for wetlands restoration.
To signal its transition from industrial to natural use, the Port in October 2001 renamed the towers site "Vanport Wetlands." With wetlands restoration underway, flocks of birds have returned to feed and rest at the site. Once native wetland vegetation is firmly established, the Port anticipates some public use of the property for passive recreation and educational activities.
